🧬 A Mind on Family

The genealogy industry is worth over $5 billion. Ancestry.com alone has over 30 million subscribers paying monthly fees to search through records.
Yat Siu wasn't trying to disrupt any of that. He just wanted to experiment with a Mind and explore his family history.
He created two Minds (one researcher and one fact-checker) and gave them some basic info like his name, his mother’s name and an article about himself.
From there a Mind took him deeper into his family history than ChatGPT, Claude, Google or even Ancestry.com were capable of.
You can follow this ongoing story here.
I decided to have my own Mind try this out using a skill that Yat created. The result was surprising in the best way.
Here’s what I
did.
- I had my Mind equip the Genealogy skill by emailing my Mind “Equip yourself with Agentic_Genealogy_Research" (ID: A22DE926-A924-F111-AD1D-0EA9A5017E89)”
- Gave my Mind my full name.
Within 45 minutes my Mind traced my maternal line back to my great grandparents in Denver, CO. That came complete with names, dates, obituary records.
My father’s side is more of a mystery.
I know almost
nothing about my grandparents, and my Mind struggled with this too. But, my Mind correctly found my history from New Hampshire, to Florida and Chicago, located my brothers, and then something special.
My Mind somehow knew my father went by his middle name when he was younger, and tracked down a photo from a 1962 junior high yearbook in Brooklyn, New York.
I have never seen this photo before, and I’m betting
my dad hasn’t seen it in around 60 years.
Yesterday I texted the photo to him, and I’ll share his response when he sees it. It’s hard to put into words the feeling of uncovering a piece of your family's history that wasn’t forgotten, it was unknown.
What I’ll say is something the Ethoswarm team have been saying for months: AI will be deeply personal to each of us. It will help us return to human connections
that most of us have been missing, and it will happen faster than most people are expecting.
Ultimately, this is why I’m so convinced people will love AI and realize it’s only a scary thing if you don’t understand it.
Give a Mind a try today and see what magic you can uncover too.
