Will We Get Crypto Clarity?
SEC Chair Paul Atkins says “this is a big week for crypto” as the Clarity Act makes perhaps its final push to be passed.
- Thursday is the date set for the Senate Banking Committee’s bill markup, while the Senate Agriculture Committee has pushed its markup to the end of January.
- The latest version of the Clarity Act says companies cannot pay interest to stablecoin holders just for holding balances. This is a win for Big Bank.
- Coinbase is telling the crypto industry to stand down on opposing the stablecoin yield language, as it
still offers yield for staking, transacting, and liquidity providing.
- The draft also has clarity on staking + airdrops not being securities by default, and draws the
line between the SEC and CFTC.
- Tokens will be classified as non-ancillary assets if they are the main asset of an ETF listed on
a national securities exchange, and registered under Section 6 of the Securities Exchange Act.
Eric Adams Launches a New York City Token
It’s a new year, but we’re running back the same memecoin playbook as last year, with major politicians launching tokens.
- Former NYC mayor Eric Adams launched a memecoin called New York City Token.
- The token was launched to help raise funds and awareness around antisemitism and anti-Americanism.
- The NYC Token ripped to a $600M market cap before plummeting to under $40M.
- Mayor Adams is being accused of pulling over $1M in liquidity from the LP, which led to the token
price falling 90%.
- The team has added new funds to the LP after severe backlash from the community, but the coin has
not yet recovered.
- Adams is estimated to have made roughly $3.5M via fees and money pulled from the
LP.
